Miyamoto Musashi - Trivia, Family, Bio

Japanese philosopher and swordsman known for writing The Book of Five Rings and Dokkōdō in 1645, the final year of his life. He is considered a Kensei, a Japanese sword saint, and developed the Niten Ichi-ryū school of swordsmanship. 

Before Fame

He won his first duel at the age of 13 and left all of his possessions to travel and duel when he was 15 or 16. He remained undefeated through 61 duels.

Trivia

The Miyamoto Musashi Budokan training center was erected in his honor. It is located in Ōhara-chō, Okayama prefecture, Japan.

Family Life

He was born in the Harima Province, Japan. His father was Shinmen Munisai, an accomplished martial artist and swordsman. He adopted four sons and a daughter.

He and Niccolo Machiavelli both wrote about the philosophy of war.
