When China-born Cai Xia Liao first met Brian Mach, she was a single mother who lived alone. Although Cai had previously been married, she and her ex-husband had come to the conclusion that it would be best to end their relationship.

However, the two are parents to a daughter, and Cai stayed in touch with her even after she moved to Melbourne, Australia, for university. In any case, Cai was considering finding a partner at the time, and she and Brian soon started talking about getting married.
